Wavelight is an LED warning light that capitalises on its maritime context by converting the mechanical energy of ocean waves to electrical energy.
Maritime disasters happen frequently – for example, a ship may strike a hidden reef or crash into a bridge. Such accidents are not only a matter of financial loss; they are also a matter of life and death. Consisting of several LED lighting units, Wavelight can provide warning to boats that they are approaching a dangerous area, or signal to swimmers that the water is too shallow for diving. Wavelight uses wave energy to illuminate the LEDs. Ocean waves are a continuous and reliable energy resource. Wavelight harnesses their mechanical energy and converts it into electrical energy. This lighting system could also be useful in offshore operations such as marine drilling and salvage efforts. |
