Lucifer

Lucifer is a refillable match dispenser and an automatic match igniter. It is also a clever reinterpretation of the traditional matchbox.

The designers of Lucifer had wondered how the matchbox could be viewed differently. That is, they questioned how it could be seen less as a tool, and more as a modern, playful object. They came up with a product that reduces the number of steps and the complexity involved in lighting a match, while respecting safety, sustainability, and our daily needs.

Lucifer is a refillable match dispenser and automatic match lighter. In order to take a match, the user must simply turn Lucifer upside down. A matchstick will fall through the opening, but will remain held there due to the bulk of its head. When the matchstick is pulled out, its head will rub against the orange striking surface, and the match will be automatically ignited.

Lucifer has been designed in four variations for four different contexts. Lucifer Habitat is for use in the domestic context; concern for safety, sustainability, and attractiveness shaped this model, which has a separate lid to prevent children from accessing the matches. Lucifer Luxury is larger; it has been designed for use in hotels, restaurants, cigar lounges, and so on. Lucifer Backcountry has a waterproof rubber lid, and is tough and durable enough to withstand the contexts of hiking, camping, or boating. Lucifer Pocket is smaller in size; it also has a waterproof rubber lid, and an integrated ashtray base. Lucifer Habitat and Lucifer Backcountry are made with recyclable polyethylene. Lucifer Luxury and Lucifer Pocket are made with glass.

The internal match-striking surface, for which inspiration was drawn from a stone, has a thickness well above the single wall layer of conventional matchboxes. It can be easily changed once worn. The transparency of the match-holding chamber allows the user to see the number of matches remaining. It can be unscrewed so the matches can be refilled. The standard size of Lucifer is 80mm high and 55mm wide.

Sustainability is a major concern of the designers, and Lucifer’s capacity to be refilled and re-used satisfies this consideration. The designers intend for Lucifer to be used with matches produced by companies that replant the trees from which the matches were derived.
