The Angle

The Angle alarm clock utilises a new technology called Audio Spotlight (developed by Holosonic), which focuses sound at a particular target. Itallows people to wake at different times without disturbing each other.

There is a tremendous amount of behavior that surrounds sleep – both waking from sleep and going to sleep. Couples almost always have to be up at different times. A typical alarm clock will wake both people, when only one of those two people has to be woken up. The person that does not have to be woken up is usually disturbed every morning, repeatedly, when they wish to be sound asleep. This is a huge and serious problem.

Many people in relationships also desire to fall asleep to music or calming sounds. What happens when only one person needs to hear some classical music to fall asleep, but their loved one needs absolute silence? This usually leads to the person having to wear bulky headphones to listen to music without disturbing their loved ones.

A new technology called Audio Spotlight has been developed by Holosonic. With this technology, sound can be focused so that a person standing (or laying) even inches away from the sound will not hear a thing. Only the person targeted will hear the sound. The Angle is an alarm clock with a speaker system that utilises Holosonic’s technology.

The unique, fully pivoting speakers of The Angle rotate on two axes. This speaker design was inspired by heating and air conditioning vents that one would find on the inside of cars produced in the 1980s. These AC/heating vents rotated up and down and side-to-side to direct heat and air at the driver and passenger, the same way that The Angle rotates and directs its speakers. The overall form of The Angle was inspired by Japanese architecture.

The end result is a design that solves an age-old problem in a new and exciting way. People can now go to sleep and wake to music or an alarm at different times without waking their loved ones.
