The tree provided design inspiration for Coal – a dual functioning clothing and room heater.
Inspired by one of nature’s most beautiful elements, the tree, Coal was conceived as a portable heater that is easy to handle and able to be used for a second function. The sense of nurture that a tree exudes has been transposed into Coal’s function as a heater. To maximise the possible area of radiant heat transmission in a room, Coal’s arm tubes take on different directions, similar to a tree’s branches. Coal is also able to function as a hat and coat stand for hanging damp winter clothing to dry.
Coal employs a cast iron tube with an internal wire filament for heat transmission. The natural roughness and dark colour of iron help to create the atmosphere of a leafless winter tree. For design cohesiveness, the plus/minus tuner for temperature control is integrated into one of the branches located near the base.
