Fence Using Planting Roll aims to energise dull, grey city areas with the vitality of vegetation on green walls.

The dense urbanism of the city environment can seem dark and desolate at times. Green spaces add a sense of energy, however, and can spark pleasant memories in the minds of urban citizens. The use of the natural material coir in the house and garden has become common all over the world. Fence Using Planting Roll finds a new use for this durable material. It aims to create a ‘natural fence’ in the harsh city environment.

The fence, or screen, is characterised by a lattice-like arrangement of coir rolls. Seeds within the coir are brought to life with water, and the coir provides a good filtering effect. Vegetation can grow all around the roll, and the space left between the rolls allows wind to ventilate through easily. A degree of humidity is advantageous to the plants’ growth.

The product can be separated for recycling. The coir is completely biodegradable, and also qualifies as a recycled material. Fence Using Planting Roll is inexpensive, uses simple materials, and requires little mechanised work. It is easy to set up. Whilst bioengineering is based upon providing green solutions to modern problems, sometimes it is necessary and indeed advantageous to combine “soft” techniques with more accepted “hard” materials.
