Nested Bunk Bed

red dot
red dot award: design concept 2007

design:
Y. Tsai

The Nested Bunk Bed aims to bring a better lifestyle and the best use of space to those in overcrowded, tiny, low cost houses.

The issues of too many people and not enough space are at epidemic levels in South Africa’s townships. It is normal for six to eight people to share just 36sqm of space. People are living in regimented, chronically overcrowded, tiny houses with no design flexibility, consideration for cultural diversity, privacy or personal space. This mix is certain to spawn a wealth of social problems from desperation and violence to crime and escapism through alcohol and drug use.

The design of the Nested Bunk Bed, inspired by the Russian Matriochka dolls that nest several dolls inside each other, is a solution that solves the sleeping arrangement in such a confined space, while being able to free up space when it is not in use. Sections of the nested bed can be pulled out to serve a number of purposes, such as a sofa for two, grandstand seating, or five beds, which can be packed away into a standard bunk bed area.

Each bed is fitted with a standard single mattress. The length of the beds increases to allow each bed to be nested under each other, leaving some storage space on the side of the beds. The size of the tallest bed is 950mm wide x 2500mm long x 1300mm high. The bed frames are constructed with timber and mild steel (sprayed to colour), with castors.
