Carlos Hinrichsen

Carlos Hinrichsen graduated as industrial designer in Chile in 1982. He holds a Master of Engineering degree received in Japan in 1991. Since 1992, he has held the position of the Director of the School of Design, Instituto Profesional DuocUC of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Carlos Hinrichsen was an Icsid board member from 2001 to 2005 and has been President-Elect of the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design from 2005 to 2007. From October 2007, he will hold the position of President for two years. He acts as juror in international design competitions such as the 6th Cycle of the Dubai International Award for Best Practices to Improve the Living Environment (DIABP) and the red dot design award.


As of 1991, Carlos Hinrichsen has participated as research director in projects concerning innovation in design education making use of new technologies. In the period of 1998 to 2003 he was head of the DuocUC Design Center, and he has taken part in the management of an interdisciplinary work team, which is engaged in the development and process of products, and implements various concepts of design, and it also cooperates with the domestic manufacturing sector. Since 1982, the center’s professional activities comprise the development of designs and products for companies such as Compañía Tecno Industrial CTI S.A., CINTAC S.A., and FABISA S.A.

Carlos Hinrichsen has organised numerous seminars and design exhibitions in Chile, and also assisted and supported the organisation of Icsid’s first and second Latin-American regional meetings, which took place in Chile in 2001 and 2005.
